This is the TV SHOW CHARACTER ANALYSIS, not the book one, and are based
on the sides of the TV show. Today we are going to be analizing the way too adorable for this world yet sarcastic and hilarious at times Simon Lewis.Remember every Wednesday is a different character!
ABC Family's Shadowhunters Character Analysis: Simon Lewis
played by Alberto Rosende.
Simon Lewis
Character
Summary: Two words adequately describe our television
version of Simon Lewis: Banter Ninja. He’s just so nerdy and quick
witted and dry and full of pop culture references and I
love him. With Alberto Rosende’s charisma and adorkable charm, I think we
have a Simon Lewis that even the incredibly wonderful Robert Sheehan can’t
beat. He’s comfortable and confident in who he is as a person,
and he’s affable and hilarious. There isn’t much aside from a Java Jones scene
and some early interaction with Raphael to go with, but it’s enough to solidify
a decent character analysis.
In regards to Clary Fray: These
two are far too adorable for their own good. He loves her, knows her like the
back of his hand and yet he seems to be his own worst enemy in regards to his other feelings
for her. He’s so busy being fully immersed in their impressive pop-culture back
and forthing that he cuts the Simon Lewis that may be in love with her right
out of the picture, all by himself.
In regards to Jace Wayland: No directly related sides involving Jace, but Jace certainly isn’t
impressed with Simon’s presence in Clary’s life. Simon manages a small victory
over Jace early on without even realising, when he calls and successfully
interrupts what is a one of the first Clace moments. Clary immediately drops
Jace and the sexy, new tension between them to get to Simon as quickly as
possible, and Simon will never even know that he won.
In regards to Isabelle Lightwood: Nothing here to go on, except a few lines at the end of a scene that had
no other context. Valentine is mentioned here. No Sizzy feels
so far, but its nice to see Simon talking to her like she’s a person, not a wet
dream fallen out of the sky.
In regards to Maureen: These two banter back and forth just as much as he and Clary, and the
script sides had her written as his bandmate/girlfriend but has since
apparently changed. However, even without the girlfriend context, Simon and
Maureen’s relationship essentially reads the same. I quite like her so far, and
her and Clary have a nice vibe between them too.
In regards to Raphael Santiago: Will not be spoiling anything too much, but they do interact early on. I
do imagine Simon’s pulse and voice get very high when he’s
around him, and there’s a bit of stuttering involved. Raphael is pretty damn
smooth though, and seems to possess the same calibre of snark as Magnus. I hope
his dark charm translates successfully through David Castro’s performance,
because if it does, we’re in for some fun.
Where ABC Family’s Shadowhunters could take Simon
Lewis: I think Simon will translate to the
television screen as well as expected. He’s a pretty safe bet, and Alberto
Rosende is a perfect choice to play him. I believe Simon’s transformation will
begin reasonably early, as there is mention of the Dumort in the first few
episodes. His struggle against his vampirism may be a season-long arc, or it
could happen very quickly – it will all depend on the pacing of the rest of the
show. His vampire storyline could also turn out deliciously dark, and I think
honing in on Simon’s inner turmoil could be an exciting way to take his
character to the next level.
Overall Character Grade: A
He is the same, lovable Simon we know and love, except version 3.0 is a
new level of dry and hilarious. The Shadowhunters Writers Room
sure know what they’re doing, and it’s clear they are having a ball with him.
There’s not much else to say really. Simon Lewis is definitely no cause for
panic. Book Simon and even film Simon had an admirable level of self-respect
which I liked – especially considering both characters could have easily turned
into a typical case of Second-Male-Lead-Syndrome, or worse – as whiney and
annoying as the Twilight Saga’s Jacob Black. But I do
have a sneaking suspicion that Alberto Rosende’s rendition may have more
gravitas and even more self-respect than previous versions, and I strongly
suspect his performance will be scene stealing like Dylan O’Brien’s Stiles
Stilinski from Teen Wolf. I also don’t think I’d be wrong
in the assumption that he may become the most beloved Simon Lewis yet. A great
character that will prove fruitful for Alberto’s career.
